CATHOLIC CHURCH

From the Issue:
July/August 2010
“Here is my creed.  I believe in one God, the creator of the universe.  That he governs it by his providence.  That he ought to be worshipped.  That the most acceptable service we render to him is in doing good to his other children.  That the soul of man is immortal, and will be treated with justice in another life respecting its conduct in this.  These I take to be the fundamental points in all sound religion.”  –  Benjamin Franklin, American founder, Writings of Benjamin Franklin, Smythe, 10:84).

CATHOLIC CHURCH

From the Issue:
June 2010
“God, by contrast, hung it all on one law - to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself.  That is not enscripted in the planets; it is written for us in His Word.  By His grace, He has placed this law into our hearts.  When we toss it out of our hearts, questioning if He has indeed spoken, innumerable laws must be written in the place of God’s law, and countless agencies must be formed to enforce those laws.”  (Ravi Zacharias, Jesus Among Other Gods, Thomas Nelson, Inc., 2000, pg. 174).

CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH

From the Issue:
June 2010
On June 13 Vicar Jay Hartman will become the 7th Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church since it joined the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, in 1957.  At that time three Lutheran churches of Fitzwilliam, Troy, and Marlborough joined together as one.  Vicar Hartman has been serving Christ Lutheran as a student/vicar since 2004 as worship and spiritual leader as he also completed his studies as part of a Synodical program called DELTO (Distance Education Leading to Ordination).  He can now be certified for ordination and thus qualified to be called and to be installed as Pastor of a church.

A special service will be held on that Sunday at 4:00 in the afternoon.  The service will be open to the public and a reception/dinner by invitation will be held immediately following the Ordination/Installation service.  The members of the congregation are excited because they have supported Vicar Hartman through these years and because this is the first ordination to be held at Christ Lutheran since the merger in 1957.

CHRIST LUTHERAN COMMUNITY BREAKFASTS

From the Issue:
June 2010
We will miss our members and friends from the surrounding communities as we take a break from preparing our third Saturday of the month community breakfasts for the summer.  We want to thank all who have joined in the fellowship and have by doing so supported the many people of the community and groups who have benefited each month.  We will resume the breakfasts the third Saturday of September.  Have a God blessed summer.

BAPTIST CHURCH

From the Issue:
May 2010
On Sunday, May 16, First Baptist Church of Troy will host Jason & Kristie, Michael, Jonathan & Timothy Holliday from At Home Ministries. Their mission is to "connect families and faith through music and testimony." There is no question that families are being undermined by so many things. All we have to do is look at our calendar, turn on the TV or hang out on the Internet long enough to see the efforts to break families apart. Our goal is to bring a moment of peace, to share the heart of our Father and His desires for families everywhere.

We invite everyone to join us on May 16 for our morning service at 10:30 AM to hear this family as they minister in music and the Word.

CATHOLIC CHURCH

From the Issue:
May 2010
Both Ascension and Pentecost are in May this year.  Ascension is the celebration of “the elevation of Christ into heaven by His own power in the presence of His disciples the fortieth day after His Resurrection”.  And Pentecost “commemorates the Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ”.

For Ascension, in some churches, “whilst the figure of Christ was made to ascend, that of the devil was made to descend”.  And for Pentecost, “in Italy it was customary to scatter rose leaves from the ceiling of the churches to recall the miracle of the fiery tongues”; while “in France it was customary to blow trumpets during Divine service, to recall the sound of the mighty wind which accompanied the Descent of the Holy Ghost”.  (The quotes above are from the Catholic Encyclopedia write-ups at newadvent.org).

April 2010
“It means”, said Aslan, “that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know.  Her knowledge only goes back to the dawn of Time.  But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation.  She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards.” - C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, First Harper Trophy edition, pg 163.
