A Genealogy of Births, Marriages & Deaths in Troy plus a list of those interred at the Village Cemetery are now available on the Library’s web site – www.troylibrary.us. You can either download the information in a spreadsheet format or view it online via Google Docs.

Janet McCullough painstakingly assembled the information from various sources including town reports, and the Library is happy to make the information available online and via excel files.  A printed copy is not currently available. Anyone needing assistance accessing the information online is welcome to come to the library for help.

NEW CARS IN TROY

When and who received the first new 1946 model automobile in Troy, after the end of WW2, in late 1945?  The answer needs an explanation.  Dr. Emerson made daily house calls in Troy and Fitzwilliam for many years, including after the end of the war.  He drove a 1940 DeSoto coupe, well used.  He was elderly during his last few years, his car had a few dents etc.  Public opinion thought he should get the first new automobile.  George Lepisto had a garage on the Fitzwilliam Road and represented Pontiac and Hudson, Charles Lepisto Sr. had a Chevy sales place on the West side of the common, next to now what is a bank.  Bill Parker had the Dodge and Plymouth sales.

ANOTHER HISTORICAL TIDBIT

On the old Cracker Jack boxes of goodies we used to snack on as kids was a young man dressed in a blue sailor suit (see insert). Some one at a veteran's event at the newly restored Depot site referred to that uniform as their Cracker Jack uniform. They were our dress blues that we wore on liberty and for official Naval events. Does anyone remember?  One could buy a fitted set of dress blues at a commercial shop that were form fitting and were excepted for liberty, but not on the base at official events. About all I could fit into now would be the sailor hat, much less a skin tight set of custom made dress blues.  On the submarine we laid the blues under the mattress on our bunks to keep them pressed and to make more room in the tiny lockers we had for clothing.  My tour of duty was 1943 - 1946 and I don't remember any reference to a Cracker Jack uniform.

CHESHIRE RAILROAD DEPOT

I hope this finds everyone well shoveled out of our October snow storm.  Before the end of the year I want to thank everyone for all of your support whether it was as a member of the committee, a selectman, a community member or a well wisher from afar.  We have had numerous  groups come by to view and learn about the rail road and the Troy Depot as well as people passing by.  We look forward to sharing with many more in the spring.

    We have put together a DVD of the 175th anniversary of Troy.  Many people still residing here are in the DVD as well as some who have since pasted.  If you are interested in a copy feel free in contacting me at 242-7902.  They are for sale for $15.00 and would make a wonderful  stocking stuffer.   All the proceeds are to benefit the continued efforts to restore and maintain the Troy Railroad Depot.

FITZWILLIAM NH HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

The Amos J. Blake House Museum will open for a festive holiday Open House on Saturday, December 10th between 11-4.  At this time the FHS will also take part in the 7th Annual Currier & Ives Cookie Tour organized by East Hill Farm.
    Once again, volunteers Rick Hoyt & Valerie Coates will reprise their roles as Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, ready to greet visitors in their Victorian inspired attire.  “Scrooge” was such an enormous hit last year he agreed to grace us with his presence again this year!  Visit with the mischievous elves in their curled up shoes.  Partake of homemade refreshments while enjoying the lovely, adorned tree.  Stroll through the bedecked rooms of our beautiful museum.  Come and see what an old-fashioned Christmas can be.

A Dr. Stone Troy history book has been donated to the Troy Historical Society with the name Leonard Ball and the  Date March 2, 1956 written in the front.  Can anyone shed light on the name or the man?  Please contact Bob Hall or Kathy Marrotte if you have any information.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Thanks to everyone who attended our Open House on October 15th and participated in the scavenger hunt.  It was interesting and fun to listen to ones talking about the history behind some of the exhibits as they hunted and found the items.  The most difficult item in the scavenger hunt was the "token of respect."  Maybe you would like to try your luck?  The museum is open the first 3 Saturdays of the month from 8 to 11 AM, or by appointment.

The Historical Society is always looking for items to display in the museum.  If you are cleaning out your parent’s, grandparent’s, or friend’s house and come across items that have historical value pertinent to Troy, the Historical Society would give those items a good home.  We are looking for Troy School yearbooks from the 1940s, family photos from some of Troy's long time residents, small furniture pieces, and items or crafts made in Troy.

CHESHIRE RAILROAD DEPOT

The Depot Committee has a dedicated membership that has been hard at work maintaining the facility, our website and organizing fundraising activities. We have some ambitious plans to expand the restoration to include the freight shed and signal house and to promote this facility for its unique place in the early industrial development of our town. This Cheshire R.R. Line made it feasible for the Goodall Mill to expand its operation which, later, became Troy Mills, employing several hundred workers.  Troy took full advantage of its promising potential, being in the immediate proximity of the line, and located at the base of the widely admired Monadnock Mountain. Tourism, facilitated by rail, was catered to in this town.
